Quitman City Council adjusts brush pickup rules

Quitman city council made adjustments to the debris pickup ordinance Thursday and proposed adjustments to the handicap parking ordinance.

The parking ordinance will be proposed for an amendment at the next meeting.

Changes include additional handicap spots in front of Dani’s Sidekicks restaurant on Lipscomb St. at N. Main and on E. Goode St. near the corner of Hart St., on the north side of the street.

The fine, which is $200 for violating a handicap spot, will also be increased to $500.

Though E. Goode is part of State Highway  154, City Administrator James Attaway said it would be up to the city to mark the spot.

The debris collection ordinance, from 1984, was amended to allow for persons who want to hire tree and brush trimming services to be picked up by the city on a case by case basis.

The ordinance states that the debris must be stacked neatly with trunks facing the roadway, no more than six feet wide and five feet tall, with trunk diameters no more than five inches.

The city reserves the right to refuse brush pickup not in accordance with the rules.

Four yearly items were approved by the council, all with Wood County: the fire protection contract, the library contract, the property tax collection contract and the fire marshal contract.

The city will receive $52,663 for fire protection and $9,000 for the library and will pay $2,200 for  tax collection and $3,189 for fire marshal service.

Mayor Randy Dunn congratulated Rebecca Yeager with the library as employee of the month.
