Quitman council approves development projects
Much of the Quitman City Council action on Tuesday, Feb. 13 concerned matters for the Quitman Development Corp.
The council unanimously voted to approve the $3,000 façade grant for the building located at 101 S. Main St. It is occupied by Minuteman Ordnance Co.
The council also approved the appointment of the new attorney for the QDC, Julie Dosher of Wyatt Hamilton Findlay PLLC.
With one opposed to the motion and four for, the council approved the much-anticipated Quitman Rental Housing Demand Study, another QDC project.
This study is being done by CDS Development Strategies and is expected to help bring in more economic development to Quitman after its 8-week completion. It will cost up to $14,000
Mayor Randy Dunn presented the “discussion and first reading of a resolution” to approve the expenditure of $125,000 for fiber optic cable throughout Quitman. The motion requires a second reading and thus could not be voted on yet. The board will decide whether to approve the expenditure at the next meeting.
Should the motion be approved, fiber optic cable (which can be up to 20 times faster) will be installed “all through the community,” according to QDC Executive Director/City Administrator James Attaway. The first phase would be the north section of Quitman.
It is a project of Peoples Telephone of Quitman and aims to make Quitman a gigabit city for broadband internet.
