Quitman ends winless campaign with 62-0 loss

Posted

The West Rusk Raiders took little time proving why they are the champions of District 9-3A D II. The Raiders never were challenged in district play this year. The Quitman Bulldogs gave it their all before falling to the Raiders 62-0.

After Quitman’s opening drive ended in a punting situation, the Raiders took possession and scored on their first play, a 58-yard pass that put them up 6-0. Quitman went three and out giving the ball back to the Raiders who promptly scored on a 60-yard run. Two plays and the Raiders were up 13-0.

Not to be deterred, the Bulldogs came back and drove to the West Rusk 24-yard line before giving up the ball on downs. This time, it took all of four plays for the Raiders to connect again on a 45-yard pass to go up 20-0 with 2:49 to go in the opening quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Raiders got a 21-yard run for a score to go up 28-0. After another Quitman punt, the Raiders followed with a 66-yard pass play to make the advantage 35-0 with 8:46 left until intermission.

Nearing the end of the first half, the Raiders drove in five plays to score on a seven-yard run to make it a 42-0 halftime score.

Things went from bad to worse as West Rusk ran back the second half kick-off 65 yards to score and make it a 49-0 lead just 13 seconds into the quarter. West Rusk scored two more times in the third quarter to take a dominating 62-0 lead. The final quarter was played with a running clock.

The Bulldog offense was sparked by the continuing tough play of running back Wyatt Hightower who rushed for 70 hard-earned yards against the district’s toughest defense.

The Raiders win the district title and move on to bi-district this week. What started out as such a promising year ended in for Quitman a disappointing 0-10 season, with one of those losses a forfeit due to COVID-19 protocol.

Quitman ended the year with just five seniors giving several underclassmen plenty of quality minutes in district play. Hopefully the experience will lead to a good off season and a successful year next season.

West Rusk was the district champion with Harmony second, Troup third and Grand Saline making the final slot after earning a season final 34-27 win over Arp.
