Quitman, Mineola band students successful at state solo and ensemble competition
Quitman and Mineola band students earned several medals after competing in the state solo and ensemble contest on June 2.
Mineola brought home 18 gold and silver state medals. Gold medalists were Lena Hughes, Joneth Esquivel, Anna Westberry, Megan Holt, Taylor Ihlenfeldt, Annalee Cook, Tish Yates, Bree Williams, Anjel Garcia and Isreal Rivera. Silver medals went to Valerie Garcia, Michael Trocolli and Armando Veloz.
Mineola ISD band director Chris Brannan said they had their best showing in the solo contest, and their ensembles also did well.
For Quitman, senior Mike Fry received a gold medal for a first division on his tenor saxophone solo. Freshman Tristan Cheek also received a gold medal for a first division on his marimba solo.
Bonnie Vander Schaaf, Emily Roman, Vincent Ogg, Ashton Goss, Tristan Cheek, Aiden Corrior and Diego Orsonio received a second division on their percussion ensemble.
