The 10th Annual High School Art Competition and Exhibition will be presented by Winnsboro Center for the Arts (WCA) at 200 Market St. from April 6-27.

The reception to celebrate the artists will be on April 21 from 2-4 p.m. at WCA.

Homeschool students and high school students in the following school districts were invited to participate in this competition and exhibition: Alba-Golden, Big Sandy, Como-Pickton, Gilmer, Grand Saline, Harmony, Hawkins, Lone Oak, Miller Grove, Mineola, Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Vernon, Quitman, Rains, Sulphur Springs, Winnsboro and Yantis.

This competition is open to all types of art providing students in Northeast Texas with a unique opportunity to be juried by professional artists, and have their artwork exhibited at WCA, with $1,000 worth of prizes awarded to the winners and a scholarship for a qualifying senior. This educational opportunity is under the direction of WCA Director of Education Ale McComic and Mary Geisler, a dedicated volunteer.

This is WCA’s fourth year to host this event. In 2013, Lyn Baldwin, working with Friends of the Rains County Public Library, decided to engage talented teens from local area high schools in learning about all aspects of creating and exhibiting their art. Since then, students have participated and gotten involved in this artistic competition.

In 2021, WCA opened its doors to “Art in the Gallery,” and it has become a highlight of their youth program. Baldwin shares that “teens needed an opportunity to express themselves through self-discovery and communication.”
