The Winnsboro Red Raiders came to Quitman to play Friday night, trampling Quitman on their home court 65-32.
The game started with an explosion of three pointers from both sides. Winnsboro Red Raiders Jerik Joyner and Wyatt Sechrist opened the game with back to back drives for triples, with Bulldog Payton Sapp responding with his own triple. Sechrist then scored another 3-pointer with Sapp once again answering with his own triple. Midway through the first quarter, Winnsboro’s Kyler Finney scored the first 2-pointer of the game. The Red Raiders then settled into a rhythm scoring three more times before the Bulldog’s Bryson Hobbs put two up on the board. Red Raider Sechrist ended the first quarter with another triple.
The opening minutes of the second quarter were a defensive battle with Winnsboro’s Finney scoring a triple and then scored twice more at the free throw line. The quarter was fought in the trenches with Winnsboro outscoring the Bulldogs 13-5 to lead the game 35-13 at the half.
The second half got off to a good start with senior Bulldog Carter Smith driving to the basket for two points. However, Winnsboro quickly found their rhythm again and dominated the third quarter, scoring 19 points to the Bulldogs’ seven. Sechrist ended the third quarter with another triple just as the clock ran out.
The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter scoring 12 points while the Raiders earned 11. However, the Bulldogs’ rally fell way short and the game ended with the Raiders winning 65-32.
Senior Bulldog Carter Smith led the young team with 14 points and four rebounds. Seniors Kameran Crockett and Payton Sapp also contributed six points each. Davis Watson showed a glimpse of the Bulldogs’ future with his three assists and two defensive rebounds.
This loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-4 in district action with a tough schedule coming up. The Bulldogs will travel to Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill on Friday, Jan. 19 followed by a bye win the 23rd.
