Resident seeks environmental enforcement

James Hervey of Quitman asked Wood County commissioners to put the sheriff’s department environmental officer back on environmental duties.

Hervey, who lives on County Road 2175, spoke during the public comment portion of the commissioners meeting Tuesday, March 5.

Hervey said the environmental rules adopted by the county have resulted in some activity, including some abandoned vehicles removed. But the environmental officer had been tasked with regular patrol duties, he said.

“We need more than just signs,” he said.

Hervey suggested borrowing the county’s trailer that has a camera and using it to catch illegal dumping.

He said the abandoned properties in the area are used for dumping. Old appliances are a hazard for children, he added.

Abandoned homes that go to blight attract rats, snakes and more.

The matter was not discussed as it was not on the agenda.

Commissioners approved the sheriff’s department purchase of four new Chevy Tahoes.

The vehicles are being bought with state funds the county received as part of the Rural Sheriff’s Office Salary Assistance Grant.

The funds are intended to bring salaries to minimum levels. Counties that already meet those levels can use the funds for equipment and training.

Lt. Miles Tucker said the cost of vehicles will be going up substantially in the near future.

The vehicles are at Maltech in Sulphur Springs and are being upfitted. They will cost about $62,000 apiece.

The department is also trading two Ford Explorers, 2016 and 2019, for a 2106 Dodge Durango.

The 2016 has 180,000 miles and has hit two hogs. The 2019 has 118,000 miles and has unresolved electrical issues.

The bid award for a used tandem dump truck for Precinct Three was postponed.

Commissioners approved plans for a 12-lot subdivision on County Road 2754 called Oakwood Meadows.

Fireworks sales for Memorial Day (May 22-27) were approved.

Interlocal agreements with Yantis and Quitman were approved for water and sewer plant mowing in both cities and road repairs in Yantis.
