The Quitman Bulldogs picked up a pair of wins last week over the Winona Wildcats and Mt. Vernon Tigers. On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Bulldogs beat Winona on the Wildcats’ home court 52-43. Quitman successfully defended their home court on Friday as they beat the Mt. Vernon Tigers 43-35.

Quitman led every quarter of the Winona game. The Bulldogs started strong with a triple and Carter Smith soon followed, scoring three baskets. The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats to lead 14-8 at the end of the quarter.

Winona tried to contend with Quitman in the second quarter but were outscored 15-12. Payton Sapp led the quarter with four points followed by Carter Smith, Jacob Breding and Daniel Kernes, each with two points. Quitman headed to the locker room leading 25-20 at halftime.

Both teams came back from halftime ready to perform, and an offensive battle ensued. Payton Sapp once again led the charge, scoring three triples, including sinking a three-pointer at the end of the quarter with just seconds left on the clock. Klayton Meadows scored twice for four points, and Carter Smith and Jace Peek each earned two points.

Carter Smith began the fourth quarter with a quick layup in the first seconds. He was fouled and landed both free throw shots. Sapp scored two on an easy lay-up. Sapp also scored three points from the free throw line. Klayton Meadows also shot a free throw.

On Friday, Feb. 2 the Bulldogs were on their home turf as they took on the Mt. Vernon Tigers. The first quarter was all Payton Sapp. Sapp shot two triples, a basket and a free throw to be Quitman’s sole player to score. Quitman ended the quarter leading 9-3.

Carter Smith topped the second quarter for the Bulldogs with four points. Sapp contributed another triple. Mt. Vernon rallied in the second quarter and outscored Quitman 13-7 to tie up the game at 16-16 at halftime.

Quitman broke away in the third quarter, scoring 16 more points. Sapp led the team with a pair of triples. Bryson Hobbs scored five points, Smith shot a triple and Meadows earned two points. The Bulldogs ended the quarter leading 32-24.

Mt. Vernon rallied in the final quarter, scoring 11 points which tied Quitman’s 11 points. However, this would not be enough for the Wildcats. Sapp scored four points, with Hobbs and Smith contributing to the final score Quitman 43, Mt. Vernon 35.
