Sparks ignite grass, brush fire
Four fire departments fought a series of grass and brush fires along County Road 2320 west of Hwy. 37 Friday afternoon. The Quitman, Alba-Golden and Hainesville departments also assisted.
The fires are believed to be the result of sparks from a trailer being towed with a flat tire. The tire was discovered along the road, and the car that was on the trailer was abandoned.
Several structures were threatened but none were damaged.
In all 13 fires were fought covering about 10 acres.
The extreme temperatures and lack of rainfall in recent weeks have made for dangerous fire conditions.
Wood County commissioners adopted a ban on outdoor burning Tuesday morning.
