Youth foundations cancel summer baseball seasons

The youth foundations for Alba-Golden, Mineola and Quitman voted last week to cancel the spring-summer baseball leagues.

The moves came after Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday, May 18 that youth sports could resume after June 1.

The three foundations had each postponed their seasons, awaiting state guidelines as well as word from Texas Teenage Baseball/Softball Association, which oversees post-season play and state tournaments.

Though the TTBA had not yet weighed in, the local associations, as well as Rains Wood County Baseball Softball Association, determined that the short window of play and other restrictions made it too difficult to try to have the season.

“Strict operating protocols and very limited resources make participation not feasible,” said Rodney Keike, of the Quitman association.

The three foundations also announced plans to begin making refunds to parents who had already signed up their children.

The Mineola foundation also has been registering for fall participation.

Mineola Youth Soccer previously canceled its spring season and opened registration for the fall.

“We hated to make this decision,” said Megan Ann Roan with the Alba-Golden foundation. “We want to make sure to keep our community and children safe through this time. We hope to be able to play next year.”
