14 propositions on state ballot
Texas voters head for the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to determine the fate of 14 state constitutional amendments.
Proposition Four is receiving much scrutiny as it impacts school property taxes. It includes a provision to increase the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $100,000 as well as correcting a prior homestead increase as it relates to school property taxes frozen for those 65 and older or disabled.
It has several other provisions, including appraisal boards in counties over 75,000 population, which will not impact Wood County.
School property tax bills which were recently mailed include the added exemption, so voters would receive an additional tax bill should the matter be voted down.
Prop. 9 offers a cost-of-living increase for retired teachers.
Prop. 14 establishes a centennial parks conservation fund for the creation and improvement of state parks.
Two amendments impact only individual counties, El Paso and Galveston.
Tax exemptions for day cares (Prop. 2) and medical/biomedical manufacturing (Prop. 10) are on the ballot, as well as the creation of a broadband infrastructure fund (Prop. 8).
There are no other matters on the ballot locally except for a handful of Wood County voters in the Como-Pickton school district, which has a bond issue.
Early voting continues through Friday at the county elections office in Quitman from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
