AG pulls away from Cumby

Posted

The Alba-Golden Panthers put a pretty complete game together last Tuesday as they pulled away from the Cumby Trojans and recorded a decisive 63-38 win.

The Panthers used a 13-point run to close out the initial quarter and take a 21-15 edge. The initial quarter presented the Panthers with some real challenges. Cumby made great use of hitting baseline cutters from the post position, were practiced at backdoor plays and were adept at finishing around the basket.

The Trojans also periodically employed a press which was notable in that the press was able to maintain its integrity even after two or three passes by the Panthers.

The Panthers were down by seven early on, but after adjusting to the game, came back strong. The end-of-quarter run consisted of 3-pointers by Brayden Randolph and Conner Gibson, an offensive rebound put-back by Kaden Kennedy, two free throws from Boogie Trimble and a shot from far beyond the arc by Gibson. Trimble played a key role in that sequence, twice nicking the ball away from Cumby.

Alba-Golden exerted their will on the game in the second quarter. Gavin Dailey and Jerry Skinner dominated the inside play. Dailey had seven points in the quarter, while he and Skinner cleaned up on the boards.

By the halftime buzzer, the Panthers had built a 16-point lead, 36-20.

The Panther defense continued its aggressive play into the third quarter, limiting Cumby to only four points.

On the offensive end, the Panthers began to see scoring from across the line-up card. Dailey, Randolph, and Gibson continued to have solid offensive games and retained their shooting range throughout the game.

The Panthers came to wear-down the Cumby side by going inside where they could leverage their size and physicality.

The Trojans were a good test and challenged Alba-Golden with creative inbound plays, great passing and finesse around the basket. The Panthers will benefit from these challenges as they continue their district play Jan. 3 against Fruitvale.
