App targets what’s happening in Mineola

Want to know what’s going on in Mineola? Now there’s an app for that.

Owen Tiner, marketing director for the city, has been working for three months to put together a comprehensive mobile app for the city that he hopes will serve as a one stop shop for anyone wanting to know what’s going on in the city.

Tiner said he felt having a central place for information is becoming more necessary, with so many events and things going on and all the wonderful amenities the city offers.

But the challenge is that information has become a commodity that has to be pushed out, rather than something people seek.

The app has capabilities to allow cell phone users to be alerted of nearby events, historical sites and shops/restaurants offering specials.

Tiner is working to ensure every business in the city is included in the listings. He asked that any business that needs changes or additions to contact him – either by calling city hall or through the app, which has a feature to report information.

The reporting feature can also be used to alert city hall to a variety of issues, from pot holes needing repair to emergency situations that require police or fire department response.

The app can be used to alert citizens to such emergency situations, Tiner explained, for example, if a traffic crash or highway construction could require an alternate route.

In addition to public safety information, notifications can include various events (“There’s a festival downtown today.”)

It will also have more functional features such as the ability to pay a city utility bill.

Cost to develop the app was $8,400, which includes maintenance for the first year.

After that it will cost about half that annually, and the project is being funded by the Mineola Economic Development Corp.

In the second year, Tiner said businesses will have the ability to upgrade their listings for a fee, which will also help support the app.

It is free to users who can download it on the respective app stores.

QR codes are available to access the app.
