Bid awarded to improve S. Stone, Newsom

The second try resulted in bids approved for improvements to Stone and S. Newsom Streets in Mineola.

Lennon Construction submitted the low bid of $460,879 to rehab the two streets.

The council previously had rejected bids for the project as being well over budget.

The city received a $250,000 grant for the project.

The remaining funds will come from money left over from another street project on Park Central.

A savings of $100,000 was recommended by engineers by eliminating base rock. Public Works Director Kyle McCoy said the project can still have a stable base without that added expense.

The city has been working on the project since 2021, when the amount of the grant was estimated to be enough to fund the project before increases in construction costs in the past few years.

City Manager Mercy Rushing said there is still some money left which will go toward the development of the parking lot planned for the old Caraday property on Front St. near the depot.
