Calvin R. Thompson 1928-2024

A celebration of life will be held for Calvin R. Thompson, 95, of Canton at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024 at The Gathering Place, 7691 State Hwy. 198 in Canton. Come and go fellowship and finger foods will be from 2 to 4 p.m.

He was born Aug. 25, 1928 in Ava, Ill. to Henry E. and Lydia M. Pierson Thompson.

Calvin passed in his sleep peacefully on Monday, July 29, 2024 to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His bride of 70 years, Naomi, was awaiting his arrival.

Calvin grew up in Ava, Ill. and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Naomi Jane Barger in 1951. They lived in Vergennes, Ill. for 46 years. Calvin retired after 35 years at Bemis Corporation in Murphysboro. He also farmed for many years. In 1997, they moved to Canton, where he enjoyed his retirement and mowing.

Mr. Thompson is preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Jane Thompson; great-grandson, Aundre Deon Thompson; two brothers; and four sisters.

Calvin is survived by his son, Lowell Thompson of Canton; daughter, Leveta Thompson of Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and Joyce Thompson of Vergennes, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Thompson of Kennedale, Aaron Thompson of Vergennes, Ill., Amy Dinga of Carterville, Ill. and Allison Keith of Pinkneyville, Ill.; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson on the way.
