Items to be unveiled in 2073 for the bicentennial of the city of Mineola were formally dedicated in a time capsule held in the cornerstone of the Mineola Historical Museum Monday.

City leaders spoke briefly to open a celebration of the museum’s 15th anniversary.

It is housed in the former United States Post Office.

When that post office was dedicated in 1936, items were placed in a copper box that was put inside the original cornerstone.

Rather than wait for 2036, that capsule was opened last year as part of the city’s sesquicentennial events, revealing a treasure trove.

Landmark Commission member Martha Holmes listed some of the items that will be revealed in 2073, to include memorabilia from the yearlong celebration in 2023, along with rack and postcards about various Mineola attractions, notes about the newly-opened Primary School, directories, maps, news articles, photos and much more.

Commission Chairman Jimmy Phillips spoke of the importance of history and how Mineola’s story fits into the larger story.

Mayor Jayne Lankford asked those assembled to consider the changes they had witnessed in their lifetimes, adding that one thing that stays the same is Mineola’s people.

Thanks were offered to Robbie Ballard for building the capsule, Chuck Harris for sealing the cornerstone and Wade Allen for the new inscription.
