Change in county employee handbook aimed at sick/vacation time practice

Posted

Though much of the revised Wood County employee handbook deals with updated verbiage and inclusion of requirements of various laws, one proposed change will alter the way employees are allowed to use sick and vacation time.

As County Judge Kevin White explained, an employee who might work eight hours on Monday and Tuesday and nine on Wednesday and Thursday (for 34 hours) would not be allowed to take a full eight hours of sick leave or vacation pay on Friday, as that would put the employee over 40 hours, giving them two hours of comp time.

The new policy restricts the use of sick leave or vacation time to create comp time that the employee did not physically work.

The social media policy which restricts the use of social media such as Facebook on county computers does create a bit of an issue, according to County Auditor Terri Sellars.

She noted that some businesses now have only Facebook pages, and if the county needs to contact them, employees have to do so on personal devices.

Commissioners were expected to approve the new policies at their Dec. 23 meeting.

The dress code section drew brief comments. The policy is left up to the individual office holder or department head, as long as it reflects a professional manner.

Other notes from the policies: The no smoking policy in county buildings includes vaping.

Any changes in status such as a promotion or demotion would be effective at the beginning of a pay period.

A person seeking to run for an elected position would no longer have to resign county employment.
