City marks anniverary with mural
The following proclamation was adopted by the Mineola City Council on Monday for the city’s sesquicentennial in 2023.
It was read Friday morning at the official dedication of the sesquicentennial mural.
WHEREAS, The City of Mineola was established in the spring of 1873 on the Houston and Great Northern Railroad, and became a crossing with the Texas & Pacific Railway, and was likely named for Minnie Patter and Mineola, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1881, the arrival of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad made Mineola a prospering junction connecting railroads in each direction; and
WHEREAS, Mineola was described as a bustling hub of activity, with hotels, opera houses, a newspaper, a theater and merchants providing all necessities of the day; and
WHEREAS, Today, Mineola has a population of 4,823 according to the United States Census Bureau, and is a prospering community with industrial, commercial, manufacturing, and entertainment industries; and
WHEREAS, A Sesquicentennial Committee was formed to develop a plan for celebrating this historic anniversary of our city; and
WHEREAS, The Sesquicentennial Committee, through partnerships with organizations, businesses, and dedicated volunteers will celebrate our history, and develop existing and new events for the entire community; and
WHEREAS, A time capsule will be created and dedicated at Mineola High School by the class of 2023; and
WHEREAS, Numerous contests, events, fundraisers in which our community members will participate, and a 150th celebration concert will cumulate in ending 2023 at the 150th Celebration Gala at the Mineola Civic Center on December 30, 2023; and
WHEREAS, The City of Mineola will be 150 years old in 2023 and this Sesquicentennial will celebrate Mineola’s history, present and future.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Jayne Lankford, Mayor of the City of Texas, do here by proclaim the year of 2023 be known as Mineola Sesquicentennial Year in Mineola, Texas and call upon the people of Mineola to join their friends, family and neighbors throughout this area in celebrating the history and future of our town. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Mineola, Texas to be affixed this day, 1st January 2023.
