Commission on Judicial Conduct issues warning to Wood County Judge Bryan Jeanes

The State of Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct issued a public warning to Wood County Judge Bryan Jeanes as a result of his driving while intoxicated arrest in April.

Jeanes was arrested south of Mineola after being stopped by Mineola police responding to a reckless driver call and was booked in jail at 1:26 a.m. on April 28. Officers found the vehicle just outside the city limits and the Wood County Sheriff’s Department was notified and took charge of the arrest.

Jeanes admitted to the Mineola Monitor at the time that he was guilty and had broken the law. He spent a weekend in the Wood County Jail in August as part of an agreement recommended by the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

The Commission concluded as a result of their meeting on Oct. 6 that Jeanes failed to comply with the law and that his action constituted a willful violation of a canon of the Code of Judicial Conduct to comply with the law. The Commission stated that the media attention surrounding the judge’s arrest and conviction for DWI cast public discredit on not only Jeanes, but on the judiciary as a whole.

“In condemnation of the conduct described above that violated Canon 2A of the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct and Article V…. it is the Commission’s decision to issue a public warning,” stated the warning.

Records confirm Jeanes was sentenced for driving while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration of .15 or more. The legal limit is .08.

The judge told the Mineola Monitor at the time “I broke the law and I’m going to have to pay the price.” He also said, “I guess the only other thing to say is I’m human like everyone else, and I’ve got my frailties and weaknesses, and I am going to have to deal with them.”
