The 2022 Wood County Jr. Livestock Show was held March 29-April 1 at the Quitman Ag Pavilion, showcasing the hard work and talents of hundreds of local young farmers and ranchers.
Sean Williams, who judged the heifers and steers Thursday evening, reflected that, “The quality of not just the cattle, but the kid in this county is very high.”
That quality commanded a corresponding price. The week culminated with a live auction Friday evening, where 113 of the competitors sold their projects for a total of $308,250. The 17 grand champion and reserve champion projects netted $71,500 of that sum.
The grand champion steer shown by Avery von Reyn of Quitman was bought by Sigma Agriscience for $9,000.
The grand champion commercial heifer, shown by Kenley Carr of Quitman was sold to Sinclair Market for $13,000, a record for the show.
The grand champion dairy heifer shown by Emma Allen of Winnsboro was purchased by Toliver Ford for $4,000.
The grand champion swine shown by Ben Boisclair of Quitman went to high bidder Wood County Farm Bureau for $4,000.
The grand champion goat shown by Kylie Adams of Hawkins was bought by Kernes A/C Heat for $5,000.
The grand champion lamb shown by Luke Wernecke of Mineola was sold to Toliver Ford for $1,500.
The grand champion broilers shown by William Louderman of Alba-Golden were purchased by Lennon Construction for $3,000.
The grand champion rabbits shown by Gunner Klepfer of Winnsboro went to high bidder City National bank for $1,900.
The grand champion ag-mechanic project, a bed and side tables made by Hunter Ballard of Mineola, went to Wood County Farm Bureau for $3,000.
Williams said, “You can tell that the parents, teachers and agents are all really heavily involved and do a good job. That’s what the program is supposed to be about is that kid going out there and learning a work ethic and how to do things on their own, and I think this was a very good example of it.”
The reserve champion steer of Alexis Villeda went to Toliver Ford for $5,500.
The reserve champion commercial heifer of Ashley Venture went to Kelly’s Korner for $4,500.
The reserve champion dairy heifer of Emma Allen was not auctioned.
The reserve champion swine of Brooke Lee went to First National Bank of East Texas for $7,000.
The reserve champion goat of Sarah Jane Crow went to K&L Auto Crushing for $2,500.
The reserve champion lamb of Riley Dunn went to City National Bank for $2,100.
The reserve champion broilers of Ashlan Barnhart went to Hero’s Ranch for $3,600.
