Dan Moore, whose long newspaper career included stints at several newspapers in and around Wood County, passed away Sunday, June 30 in Tyler at age 70.

Moore was most recently the director of marketing and business development for the Henderson Economic Development Corp., following his service as the publisher of the Henderson News from 2017-22. The Wood County Monitor was printed at the Henderson News during that time.

Moore was born to the late James Daniel Moore Sr. and Alice Moore of Columbia, S.C.

He married Ann Kennedy on March 23, 1984 at the Whitehouse, a youth ministry center in Camden, S.C.

Moore started his career in Murfreesboro, Tenn. but spent most of his career in Texas, and more specifically East Texas. His experience included advertising sales, management and publishing groups of newspapers.

Prior to Henderson, Moore was editor and publisher of the Alvin Sun and Advertiser. His career included serving as group sales manager for Bluebonnet Publishing’s six newspapers, including the Mineola and Quitman papers. He and Ann previously owned and operated the Grand Saline Sun. He also served as sales manager for the Palestine Herald Press and publisher of the Lindale News & Times for six years when it was part of Westward Communications, which also owned the Mineola and Quitman papers and was headquartered in Mineola.

Moore was active in the communities his newspapers served, in civic clubs such as Rotary and through chamber and economic development groups. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and secretary of the Alvin Sunrise Rotary Foundation. He also served in leadership positions with economic development groups and chambers of commerce.

In addition to serving as a director of the Texas Press Association, he served on the boards of the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association and the North and East Texas Press Association. He was a past president of NETPA and served for many years as the group’s finance chairman.

In 2023, NETPA honored Moore with the Sam Holloway Award. The award recognizes a member and journalist who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in support of the association while also upholding high standards of journalistic integrity and service to the community.

Dan loved to cook, fish and explore new regions.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Moore of Henderson; brothers, Ron David Moore and wife Nancy, and Keith Moore and wife Gerrie, of Clarksville, Tenn.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 16 at First Baptist Church of Henderson, 207 W. Main St., Henderson. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for visitation.
