Demolition in the works for historic park pavilion

After years of trying to figure out a way to save the pavilion at Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman, the city is moving ahead with a project to replace the pavilion with a new one.

The Quitman Lake Country Charitable Foundation is spearheading efforts to raise money for the project.

There was no action taken last Thursday on an economic development agreement between the city and the foundation to fund the demolition of the existing park pavilion and construction of a new pavilion.

“We did table it because we need more clarification from legal counsel,” Mayor Randy Dunn noted. “We checked with legal counsel and they said we could go ahead and start and buy materials. Materials can take up to five weeks to get here.”

The city received a $75,000 check from the Quitman Lake Country Charitable Foundation last Friday to cover materials for the beginning of the demolition process.

“The new structure will be built to match the concrete pad but will only have poles on the outside ring and the center,” Dunn said. “There will no longer have any poles between the outside edge and the center which will allow much more room. There will still be a stage.”

The foundation posted the following: “The Jim Hogg Park Pavilion has been hosting events and gatherings for decades. Generations of Quitmanintes have gathered for family fun! It is now in desperate need of reconstruction. Reconstruction includes a total new build plus new stage and sound system.

Currently about $80,000 of the approximately $400,000 has been raised.

Help us make this a reality for our community! Any donated amount will help and we will update often to let you know how the donations are coming. You can also help by sharing this information and helping us spread the word!”
