District clerk resuming passport service

Passport service will soon be restored to the Wood County district clerk’s office.

County commissioners approved the plan by District Clerk Suzy Wright last week to resume the service.

The plan also includes obtaining equipment to allow passport photos to be made on site.

The passport fee is set by law at $35, and the county will also charge a $15 fee for those wanting photos.

Wright said the service is awaiting approval from the state.

Commissioners approved the purchase of a police package pickup from Parkway Chevrolet in Tomball for $66,248.

Lt. Miles Tucker said the cost of the pickup fully equipped is about the same as the base cost of a Chevy Tahoe, which had been a common police vehicle before cost increases in recent years. The cost of equipping the pickup was $12,513 and the base price $53,707.

It was purchased through a state grant benefiting rural sheriff’s departments.

Commissioners also approved spending state grant funds for rural district attorney’s offices for $173,637 in salary supplements, including $137,500 in salaries and $36,137 in taxes and benefits.

Five prosecutors, the investigator and the victim’s assistance coordinator are receiving the funds.

The Winnsboro Food Pantry was approved to receive surplus county furnishings for its new offices.

The “snow bird” period for RV rentals at Lake Hawkins was extended by two months, one on either end, to be from Oct. 1 to April 30. It brings in additional revenues during slow times. There are 23 spaces dedicated to snow birds, primarily residents of northern states, and thus far all 23 have never been used.

Otherwise RV sites are limited to 10-day stays.
