Don’t expect Mineola Lady Jackets to be a pushover in 2023

Lady Jacket volleyball head coach TaShara Stephens did not mince words. “Mineola is no longer someone folks looked to add to the schedule for a boost, now they add us for the challenge.”

Stephens’ confidence comes from being a frequent visitor to the second season.

“I put it this way to the team,” she said, “…we know we can compete in district; we know we can earn a playoff berth; we know we can win in the playoffs; now we have to get past the second round.”

She has much to look forward to with the 2023 campaign. Despite losing a number of seniors from last year’s squad, the Lady Jackets return several veterans with varsity experience.

Among those returnees is stand-out blocker Olivia Hughes and the sole senior expected on the squad, Macy Fischer.

Stephens did not hesitate one second when asked who would be the leader of the 2023 Lady Jackets. “Macy Fischer,” she smiled, “she can do everything.”

Stephens has lined up three pre-district tourneys to expose the squad to a variety of challenges while they solidify their tactics. In addition to the Van and Tyler tourneys, Stephens added the Athens tourney in order to see some completely new teams. Other opponents in Athens are Jacksonville, Westwood and Oakwood.

The Lady Jackets will continue their mantra of high-tempo volleyball. They will also, this year, add considerable focus to service play and defense.

“We are excited for the upcoming season,” Stephens summarized, “and everyone better watch out for Mineola volleyball.”
