Downtown fire extinguished quickly
Quick work by the Mineola Fire Department and timely reporting prevented a major fire in the downtown business district Wednesday, May 15 just before 5 p.m.
According to the fire department, a roof repair job at 124 E. Broad resulted in a hidden fire underneath the roofing materials. Employees noticed smoke in the building and called the fire department, which was able to locate the cause fairly quickly and remove the smoldering materials.
The result was minimal damage, and the restaurant was able to remain open. Roofers returned to repair the damage ahead of expected rains that came on Thursday.
