Ernest “Ernie” Eloy Ortiz, a beloved and devoted husband, father and “Pawpaw,” passed away on Oct. 16, 2023, at age 83. He was born on March 24, 1940 in Trinidad, Colo. to Emilio and Luggie Ortiz.

Ernie had a fulfilling career as an expeditor for LTV and Northrop Grumman in Grand Prairie, where he ensured that parts were being processed properly for over 35 years until his retirement in 2000.

While on the job in the mid-1960s, Ernie had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Luttrull, who would become his wife and partner in life. Their love for each other grew, and on Dec. 29, 1967, they exchanged vows, embarking on a beautiful journey together, spanning more than five decades.

In 2000, Ernie and Barbara made the decision to settle down in Quitman after relocating from Fort Worth. Together they enjoyed remodeling their house, making it their forever home. They embraced the close-knit community and found comfort in their faith as members of the First Assembly of God in Quitman. It was important to Ernie to never miss a Sunday unless he was ill, and even then, he still wanted to go.

Ernie was a proud and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished his role as Pawpaw. In his spare time, he could be found holding Barbara’s hand while watching TV and enjoying his favorite shows, and he was always one to appreciate a well-deserved nap. During his younger years, he delighted in traveling and had a passion for watching his sons play baseball.

Ernie will be dearly missed and forever remembered as a smart, dedicated and loving individual. He leaves behind a legacy of love, family and precious memories that will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He greets in Heaven his parents, Emilio and Luggie Ortiz; and one brother, Bobby Ortiz.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of nearly 56 years, Barbara Ortiz of Quitman; four children, Crystal Baker of Sherwood, Ark., Justin Ortiz of Sherwood, Ark., Rachel Henson and husband James of Clarksville and Timothy Ortiz of Fort Worth; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Ortiz of Fort Worth; five siblings, Rosella Leonard, Margie Shannon, Billy Ortiz, Patty Boutell and Louie Ortiz and wife Donna; six grandchildren, Brandon, Dylan, Brooklyn, Addison, Noah and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Kylynn and Axston; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023 at 2 p.m. at First Assembly of God in Quitman with Pastor Ken Otwell officiating. The family received friends Friday evening, Oct. 20, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Lowe-Gardner Funerals & Cremations.
