Farmers markets popular around county

Farmers markets are ongoing in Mineola, Quitman and Winnsboro during the summer months.

Winnsboro

When it comes to their farmers market, Winnsboro does not go halfway. Their market, which is comprised of three huge covered buildings plus some vendor tents, is filled with chattering, laughing, and talking – but most importantly, with fresh, homemade products.

Lip balm, dog treats, salted caramels. Produce, custom nesting boxes for screech owls (yes, you heard that right), bouquets, bath salts, granola bars, cookies – you name it, and they just might have it. In fact, there’s so many unique, handmade and totally interesting products that visiting the farmers market is almost like visiting First Monday Trade Days in Canton.

Vendors at the market love what they do, which adds to the feeling of camaraderie at the event.

“I make (unusual jellies) because I love it; and I love people smiling!” said Susie Baker, a vendor.

The Winnsboro Farmers Market is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon, April through October.

Mineola

Held in the pavilion next door to the train station in downtown Mineola, the Mineola farmers market has products like jelly, jams, meat, fresh produce, honey, jewelry, olive oil, and the like. There are even a few things you wouldn’t expect, just for good measure: products like 100+ year old sourdough starter, homemade pasta noodles, personalized cups, and more make an appearance at the Mineola farmers market. It is held every Saturday from 8-1, May through October.

Quitman

The Quitman farmers market sells a wide variety of items, ranging from live chicks to starter plants to cinnamon rolls, starter bread, herbal teas, eggs and more. They are hosted by the Quitman Chamber of Commerce.

Quitman’s farmers market is held every second Saturday of the month at Jim Hogg City Park. It is open from 8-noon, April through October. According to the chamber, August’s market may be canceled if the weather grows too warm.
