FBC Quitman marking 175th

Sunday, Nov. 16 will see a big celebration near downtown Quitman: the 175th anniversary of First Baptist Church.

“We are part of something historic,” said Pastor Joel McMullan. “I have yet to – when I tell people that we’re turning 175 years old – (find) that someone says, ‘Oh, I remember when my church did that!’”

Sunday’s lineup is a nostalgic throwback to some of the events held during the original church meeting, such as a ringing of the historic bell, the singing of worshipful and joyful hymns, a performance of special music, and more. The event will also be attended by Texas Congressman Lance Gooden, who will read a Legacy Tribute to the church. McMullan says that there will be a lunch and concluding remarks following the church service.

First Baptist Church invites anyone in the community to come join them in celebrating. The event is free and begins at 10:30.
