Flint and Steel marks year of progress

A review of the first year of the Flint and Steel Coalition in Mineola shows progress on multiple fronts and even bigger plans in the future.

At last week’s biweekly meeting, Todd Witt reviewed the various activities that the group has spawned as well as myriad connections that will yield progress on multiple fronts.

He stressed how fast things have moved in the first year, with many projects poised to get off the ground in the coming months.

One of the next to come through is the Mineola Skate Club, a collaboration of Flint and Steel and Mineola Middle School.

The club is expected to get underway March 1. It will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5 at the school and teach skating as well as life skills.

Participants who successfully complete the program will be able to keep the skateboards and related equipment (helmets, knee and elbow pads, etc.). They won’t just be handed a skateboard but will be learning how to build the boards from the various components and can paint it to personalize it .

Another project that is in the planning stages for a June launch is the Wood County Unity Mural Project, which is planning a mural on the north wall of the Ramirez building on S. Pacific St.

During the week of June 17-24, Miami, Fla. muralist Luis Valle will be in Mineola to direct the project.

The mural will become part of a much bigger project around Wood County with various murals planned, including some that will change from time to time.

The Wood Walls Muralist Guild will be the guiding organization, with hopes that one day local participants will be directing projects.

The group is looking to partner with the city of Mineola for the wall adjacent to the planned restrooms and charging stations at Commerce and Johnson Streets.

Among the recent connections that have been made, plans for a concrete skate park to replace the current wooden structures at Front and Stone Streets and plans for a BMX pump track nearby have attracted professional interest which should help move those projects forward.

The group is also working on the possibility of a community garden.
