Genealogy society plans January gathering

Wood County Genealogy Society will meet Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library, 202 E. Goode. Members will be at the library at 6 p.m. for those needing assistance in building a family tree. 

Speaker will be Michael Hurley. His topic will be “King’s Mountain Boys,” an explanation of the battle of King’s Mountain which turned the tide of the war for American Independence in the Southern Theater.

Hurley is a graduate of the Christian University and the Brown Trail School of Preaching and was named an honorary alumnus of Brown University in 2020.

He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Order of the Southern Cross and the East Texas Genealogy Society.

He is president of Historic Tyler Inc. and sits on the City of Tyler Historic Preservation Board. He is a member of the Smith County Historical Society and the Historic Oakwood Cemetery Restoration Committee.

Hurley is the president of Hurley Benefit Services, LLC.
