Grand opening set for little library

Posted

The Little Free Library at Iron Horse Square Park in downtown Mineola will have its grand opening at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, along with a reception and book donation activity. Although books have already been donated and the library has already been in operation, there will always be a need for more books for all reading levels. Bring one or more books to donate to be placed in a drawing for a door prize.

Please encourage children to go by Iron Horse Square, sit down, read a book or take it home. They can trade a book from home for one of the books at this library.

The Little Free Library is sponsored by Epsilon Gamma, the Wood County chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a professional society of women educators.

Special thanks to ASTEF (Alpha State Texas Educational Foundation) Project Stipend to fund the building of the Little Free Library; Chuck Harris Concrete for donating form preparation with steel reinforcement; Martin-Marietta Products for donating concrete for the pad; Denise Tyndell and Wood County Monitor, who donated newspaper racks placed inside the cab of the train that houses the books; and Robbie and Nicole Ballard of Yellowjacket Welding for the fabrication of the train shape for the design.

Former Mineola Middle School reading teacher Debbie Nutt developed the original “Reading Railroad,” and Brenda (Blackmon) Davidson had the idea of bringing Little Free Libraries to Mineola.

Substitute weather day will be Saturday, March 27 at 2 p.m.
