A Sulphur Springs man is in the Wood County Jail after apparently firing a shot during a child custody exchange at a Dollar General store between Quitman and Yantis on Monday, Oct. 27.

Diquincie Zikeith Morris is being held on $250,000 bond for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a first degree felony.

He was arrested at a residence in Sulphur Springs on Oct. 28.

The victim was taken to UT Health hospital in Quitman and then flown to Tyler with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident occurred at the Dollar General on Hwy. 154 near FM 288 just after 5 p.m.

Deputies determined that two individuals got into an argument while exchanging minor  children per a custody agreement. They were able to view security footage from the store which showed the children loading items into the suspect’s vehicle, a Ford pickup.

A male subject exited the other vehicle and approached the pickup driver, who was identified as the children’s biological father. It appeared words were exchanged, and the victim then went to the passenger side of the pickup.

The driver fired a round from a handgun, striking the victim. One small child could be seen running while covering his ears, and the other children were in the vicinity as well.

After obtaining an arrest warrant, deputies arrested Morris with assistance from Hopkins County, Sulphur Springs police and Texas Ranger Warren Williamson.
