Jack Cross Pavilion hosts livestock show

Winnsboro City Park was filled with trucks, livestock trailers and hundreds of exhibitors, handlers and spectators Saturday morning, Oct. 31, for the 56th annual Jack Cross Memorial Livestock Show held at the Jack Cross pavilion at the park. Participants traveled from across Texas and neighboring states to compete in the annual event.

The show began at 9 a.m. with peewee showmanship, where young handlers guided animals weighing up to 10 times as much as they did around the arena, demonstrating their fitting and handling skills.

Competition continued through the junior, intermediate and senior beef cattle divisions. To keep the schedule moving, ring officials split the arena: Dairy cattle opened the east ring before giving way to meat goats and lambs, while British and exotic cattle occupied the center ring and American breeds competed in the west ring.

Among the day's top honors, Langston Welch of the Van FFA chapter took supreme champion bull honors with Mafia Made, bred by BGR Livestock and owned by Garrett and Morgan Ragan. Mafia Made is a registered Maine-Anjou/Maintainer bull.

In the dairy division, Wes Davis earned the belt buckle for junior champion dairy showmanship alongside the banner for supreme dairy heifer, while Addyson Koon earned the senior champion dairy showmanship buckle. In market classes, Jordyn Green took the champion American steer banner, and Kooper Dennie claimed the intermediate champion showmanship buckle in the lamb competition.

The annual show honors the legacy of Jack and Hazel Cross, longtime agricultural advocates in the Winnsboro farming and ranching community. Founded to promote agricultural heritage, the event provides area youth with an opportunity to develop their showmanship, sportsmanship and livestock care skills.
