John Brotherton, 79 of Alvin passed away Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022 in Pearland.  He was born Feb. 5, 1943 in Mineola and was a resident of Manvel for over 43 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Alvin and life-long Methodist. He was preceded in death by his parents, James “Jim” and Gracie Brotherton.

John is survived by his wife, Ann Browning Brotherton; daughter, Buffy Laine Downing and husband Jerod Downing; grandson, Barrett Laine Downing; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

John was a dedicated athlete throughout his life, excelling in football, basketball, baseball, track and tennis at Mineola High School. After being highly recruited by every Southwest Conference college as well as several other major colleges from California to Ohio, John proudly chose Texas A&M. There, he was captain of the 1964 Texas Aggie football team, honorable mention All-Southwest Conference 1963, second team All-Southwest Conference 1964, member of the Letterman’s T Association, and president of the Health and Physical Education Club. A graduate of Texas A&M, Class of 1965 with a bachelor of science degree, John worked for 35 years as a high school athletic coach, first at Sam Houston High in Houston, then at Spring Branch High School, and finally as football and track coach as well as department chair for physical education at Alvin High School for 21 years.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Alvin.
