Kid Fish a success at Lake Fork

Posted

“Oh, Dad!! Daddy, daddy!”

This, along with laughter, chatting and squealing of happy children, was not an uncommon sound at the Wood County Kid Fish event on Saturday.

The event, which was sponsored by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Sabine River Authority, was intended for kids aged “zero to 16,” but ended up being a fun time for all. According to registration officials, over 200 people came to Kid Fish; by 11:30, kids had hooked almost 100 catfish, along with numerous perch, crappie and others.

“They’ve been doing (the event) for 30 years,” said Kurt Kelley, the senior game warden for Wood County. “Basically, that’s what it is, is tradition.”

The fishing “tournament” was completely free for attendees. According to Kelley, private donors and individual donations had provided for the fishing  poles, t-shirts, prizes and more.
