Lady Bulldogs build team chemistry at summer basketball camp
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs headed northwest recently, spending the week of June 2-5 sharpening their skills and strengthening team bonds during their annual team basketball camp at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Head Coach Blake Hamrick, Assistant Head Coach Sheila Sapp and Assistant Coach Maddie Whitehurst got to experience cheering the team on from high up in the bleachers while Jason Sapp took the reins as the team’s coach for the week, leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 4-4 record over three days of competition. Two of the team’s losses came against Denton Ryan, the two-time defending Class 5A state champion.
While the games provided valuable experience, all coaches agreed that the camp’s greatest benefit was the opportunity for players to grow together as a team, both on and off the court.
“We took our annual trip to Southeastern Oklahoma State University for team camp,” Coach Sapp said. “While the games are important, this trip is more about team bonding and camaraderie. These girls embodied this and were a unit both on and off the court. Proud of this team and where we are right now.”
The trip was made possible through fundraising efforts that generated approximately $4,200 to help cover expenses.
Coach Sapp said the team showed promise throughout the camp, especially against strong competition.
“Looking at this group, I see more than basketball players,” she said. “I see leaders, competitors, friends and young women who are capable of something special. We had a great showing at team camp, playing within 13 points of the 5A defending state champs, Denton Ryan. Those games will help us build for this season. Let’s get to work.”
Summer workouts for the Lady Bulldogs began June 1, with the team continuing preparations for the upcoming season while also enjoying a well-earned summer break.
