Lady Bulldogs split contests, remain in playoff contention
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs split district games last week, winning at Winona and losing to state-ranked Harmony Friday.
The Lady Bulldogs whipped Winona in straight sets 25-5, 25-19 and 25-7. Quitman dominated offensively and played solid defense.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Carley Spears had 18 assists, two kills, six digs; Ava Burroughs eight kills, six digs, six aces; Ashley Davis four kills, four digs; Brooklyn Marcee four kills, four digs; Maddy Pence one kill, three aces, three digs; Alexis O’Neal six digs; and Kaysi Parker two kills.
Quitman played second-ranked Harmony tough, but fell 25-20, 25-22, 25-14. In the first set, Quitman was down 18-10 when Burroughs got a powerful kill. Harmony took a 23-16 lead but the Lady Bulldogs fought back to 23-19 before falling 25-20.
In the second set the Lady Bulldogs led throughout much of the action. O’Neal served an ace making it a 16-16 tie and had an 18-17 lead on a soft shot by Burroughs over the middle blocker. Down 22-21, Lady Bulldog Ashley Davis scored on a hard serve tying the game at 22-22. Harmony called a time-out and came back to score three points to take the win 25-22.
In the final set, the Lady Bulldogs were not able to overcome Harmony’s early 14-7 lead before falling 25-14.
Stats for the Harmony game were Spears 15 digs, two aces, 22 assists; Davis two kills, two digs, two aces; Brooklyn Marcee four digs, one ace, five kills; Burroughs five digs, one ace, 17 kills; O’Neal 14 digs and two aces.
The Lady Bulldogs are in the playoff hunt after finishing the first half of district 3-2. After taking on Mineola Tuesday night, the Lady Bulldogs travel to Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill Friday.
