Lady Bulldogs split matches during the week
The Quitman Lady Bulldogs picked up a win over Chisum Tuesday, Sept. 8, before falling to Lone Oak Friday.
Quitman swept Chisum 3-0 at Delbert Ballard Gym Tuesday in what Head Coach Archie Thompson called one of the team’s strongest performances of the season.
“They looked great. This was one of their better games of the season,” Thompson said.
The Lady Bulldogs edged Chisum 27-25 in a close first set before taking control with a 25-13 win in the second. Quitman closed out the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third.
The win was particularly encouraging for Thompson as Chisum entered the season as the defending district champion.
It was the fourth straight victory for Quitman, following wins over Mineola, Alba-Golden and Union Grove.
The Lady Bulldogs were back at home Friday against Lone Oak, but the match came during a busy Homecoming week that Thompson said disrupted the team’s normal routine.
Lone Oak took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-13 before Quitman responded with a 25-23 win in the third. Lone Oak closed out the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth to win 3-1 and end Quitman’s four-match winning streak.
Thompson said Homecoming activities, including the parade, created distractions and changes to the team’s normal routine leading into Friday’s match.
Despite the loss, Thompson remains optimistic about the Lady Bulldogs’ chances as they move into the next portion of their schedule.
“As long as we stay healthy, we’ll be okay. A majority of teams we’ll face are like Chisum. I believe we can possibly position ourselves for a playoff run,” Thompson said.
Quitman, 11-15 hosted Harmony Tuesday, Sept. 15 (results unavailable at press time), before heading to Commerce Friday, Sept. 18.
