Lady Hawks outlast QHS Lady ‘Dogs

The state-ranked Hawkins Lady Hawks needed a strong second half to hold off a determined Quitman team for a 61-51 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

Both teams lit up the scoreboard early, and the score after one quarter had Quitman leading 17-16. Quitman was hot from the free-throw line, hitting on 14-18 in the first half for a 34-28 lead at the half. Quitman hit 17 of 22 free throw attempts in the contest.

A 19-8 run for Hawkins in the third quarter boosted the Lady Hawks to a 47-42 lead after three quarters. The Lady Hawks continued their second half success, outscoring Quitman 14-9 for the final tally, 61-51.

The Lady Hawks were led by Laney Wilson who scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. The Lady Hawks’ balanced scoring included Jordyn Warren who hit 17 points and hauled in seven rebounds. Also in double figures for Hawkins were Taetum Smith with 12 and Londyn Wilson with 10 points.    

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Maddy Pence, who scored 12 points, followed by Annabelle Popek with 10 and Kaysi Parker and Allie Berry with eight points each. The Lady Bulldogs hit five three-point shots from Addie Marcee, Ashley Davis, Larken Spears and two from Berry.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action this weekend at the Winnsboro Tournament beginning Thursday.
