Lady Jackets continue push for district crown

The Mineola Lady Jackets began the second round of district play just as they started: with a decisive run-shortened win over the Eustace Lady Bulldogs. On a blustery afternoon, the Lady Jackets cruised to a 12-2 win on their home diamond.

Journie Wilson got the start against Eustace. She tossed five innings, gave up no hits, struck out 11 and walked one. Uncharacteristically, Mineola committed three errors in the field, gifting Eustace two runs.

The Lady Bulldogs used three pitchers in an effort to keep the Mineola hitters at bay. For three innings, the tactic worked, as the score was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Lady Jackets then began to find their groove at the plate. They put up six runs on five base hits and two Eustace errors.

Once warmed up, the Lady Jackets continued swinging the bats well. In the fifth, consecutive base hits by Maddie Short, Jorja Young and Caroline Castleberry kept the pressure on the Lady Bulldogs.

Wilson smashed a low liner to center field, which normally would have been a round-tripper, but it was knocked down by the wind for a long sacrifice fly.  The Lady Jackets scored again on a Eustace error to meet the ten-rule rule and conclude the game.

Mineola next hosts Malakoff on Tuesday, April 7. The first pitch is at 6 p.m.
