Lady Jackets start district with consecutive wins
The Mineola Lady Jackets are geared up for a long softball season. After having started their district schedule with a 13-0 drubbing of Eustace, the Lady Jackets dispatched the visiting Quitman Lady Bulldogs, 16-1, last Friday.
The Lady Jackets brought their bats. They banged out 13 base hits, including four extra base hits. Nine Lady Jackets registered hits against Quitman, with Caroline Castleberry, Jadelyn Marshall and Jorja Young stroking multiple hits.
After starter Marshall (3 innings, 2 hits, 0 BB, 3 K) set the Lady Bulldogs down in order to start the game, Mineola went to work at the plate. Mahayla McMahon tripled to left-center, driving home Castleberry, who was aboard after drawing a walk.
The Lady Jackets batted around and put six runs up in the bottom of the first.
Quitman generated a nice sequence in the second. Kori Hammond singled up the middle. She was forced out at second on a ground ball off the bat of Madi Clanton, who beat the double play throw at first.
Abby Johnson then launched a ball into deep right field for a double, putting runners on second and third. Kensliegh Sanders brought Clanton home from third with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The sole run was all that was in the offering for Quitman. Mineola chalked up five runs in the second, and added five runs in the third to conclude the game by run rule.
One-sided softball games can often be burdensome to watch. Towards the end of this game, a moment of levity and humanity was provided by Quitman catcher Chloe Jones.
Jones took a spill in front of home plate when some of her equipment had become dislodged and tripped her up. As she emerged from the dust, she was wearing a huge smile -- which appeared as a combination of self-depreciating humor and just plain old fun.
Despite a very one-sided game, Jones communicated the key to the game of softball: it is fun.
Senior Lady Jacket Jadelyn Marshall appeared in top form. She threw with excellent placement and consistency.
The Lady Jackets possess a combination of skill, power and softball acumen which should send them on a long ride this campaign.
