Landmark commission OKs mural on S. Pacific

Posted

The latest mural in the inventory of the Wood County Walls project of the Flint and Steel Coalition gained approval from the Mineola Landmark Commission last Thursday.

It will be on the south-facing wall of the Smoke Shop at 120 S. Pacific and will feature a bull breaking through the wall.

The mural required approval from the landmark commission because it is within the downtown historic district.

The mural project includes the unity mural just south of that location that was completed last year, the mural on the north wall of the Musgraves’ families MPrints building in N. Johnson done in the spring and the recently-completed small mural on the front of the Dairy Queen on W. Broad by Lauren Pitre.

Approval of the latest mural followed lengthy discussion on whether the mural was reflective of Mineola’s history.

The Smoke Shop mural will be painted by Luis Valle, who also did the unity and Musgraves murals.

It will be accomplished the week of Sept. 10 and dedicated Sept. 16 to kick off a planned muralist festival throughout the county.

The commission decided to reschedule its celebration of the 100th anniversary of the brick streets in Mineola until September, after the sesquicentennial concert at the nature preserve on Labor Day weekend.

The location for the historical marker was also discussed, possibly somewhere on Johnson St. It will be unveiled once it is erected in the coming weeks.
