Local athletes miss out on medals at state track meet
Five student athletes from Quitman, four from Mineola and one from Alba-Golden competed in six events at last week’s state high school track meet in Austin.
In the pole vault, Quitman’s Brooklyn Marcee just missed a medal in a three-way tie for second at 12’. With the most misses, she wound up in fourth.
She opted to begin vaulting at 11’, the height at which the first two competitors were eliminated. She cleared her first attempt, as did five others.
Defending champion Joy Sherwood of Great Hearts Monte Vista waited until 11’6” to join the fray.
Two more were eliminated at 11’6” while the remaining five cleared it on the first try. They also included Laney Kucera of West, last year’s bronze medalist.
At the 12’ mark, only Cadence Sansom of Lago Vista made it on the first attempt. It took Kucera and Sherwood two tries while Marcee needed three, and the fifth vaulter dropped out.
This time the bar was raised only three inches, and that 12’3” bar basically determined the outcome.
Kucera cleared it on the first try while Sansom and Marcee were eliminated. Sherwood opted to skip 12’3” and went directly to 12’6”.
Kucera cleared it on her second try while Sherwood missed her remaining tries.
That left Kucera as the champion with a three-way tie for second at 12’. Sansom earned the silver medal with no misses at 12’ and Sherwood the bronze with one miss.
Though Marcee placed 6th in the 100-meter hurdles, she shaved a third of a second off her regional time to record a 15.32, her personal best. The winning time of 14.4 was posted by Yierra Flemings of Cameron Yoe.
In the boys 1600-meter relay, the Quitman squad of Cason Johnson, Dalton Crowson, Brandon Jimenez and Jack Tannebaum took fourth place, missing a medal by just .18 of a second to McGregor. They had posted the seventh best qualifying time.
Their 3:23.61 shaved .19 off their regional time and also placed them ahead of Atlanta, the team that won the regional. Near the end of the third leg, Jimenez actually gave Quitman the lead briefly. They were less than a second out of the top spot, won by Palacios at 3:22.79.
In the girls 1600-meter relay, the Mineola team of Kozbie Riley, Olivia Hughes, Carmen Carrasco and Shylah Kratzmeyer did not improve their time but did improve their place, moving up to 7th after coming in with the eighth best time. They ran a 4:06.53. Shallowater won the event at 3:55.59.
In the girls 800-meter run, Hughes was off her regional time, and best in the field, of 2:18.26. She placed sixth in 2:24.62. Kila Rodas of Edna won in 2:19.41.
In the Class 2A meet, Jake Hallman of Alba-Golden placed 8th in the 100-meter dash with an 11.02. Winning time was 10.32. Hallman shaved three-tenths of a second off his regional qualifying time, also bettering the 11.08 he ran in the regional prelims. He had entered the state meet with the 8th best qualifying time.
