MINEOLA, Texas — Individuals ages 8-17 in the region are invited to participate in complimentary introductory airplane rides offered by local pilots during the “Young Eagles Rally,” hosted by Wood County’s Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1475 at Wood County Airport-Collins Field in Mineola.

The event is scheduled for May 23 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The EAA Young Eagles Program is designed to introduce youth to the world of aviation by offering opportunities such as flying with a volunteer pilot, learning about aircraft operations and exploring aviation careers through hands-on activities. Through these experiences, participants gain a firsthand view of aviation, encouraging curiosity about science and technology while inspiring confidence in future educational and career choices.

The Young Eagles flight experience begins with a short ground-school introduction to aviation, followed by a preflight briefing with a pilot. Participants then enjoy a 15- to 20-minute flight over the local area. After landing, participants receive a certificate signed by their pilot, legendary air show pilot Sean D. Tucker and NFL All-Pro Jimmy Graham.

Each participant also receives an official Young Eagles logbook that includes a personal code for a complimentary EAA student membership and access to Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course.
Parents may register participants at the Young Eagles registration page. After registering, families will receive a confirmation email with additional instructions.

Nearly 2.5 million young people have received a free introductory flight through the Young Eagles program. More than 50,000 pilots and 50,000 ground volunteers have participated in the program, introducing young people to aviation and encouraging interest in flight-related careers and education opportunities.

The Experimental Aircraft Association is based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and promotes aviation through a community of aviation enthusiasts. The organization includes more than 290,000 members and 900 local chapters focused on flying, building and restoring recreational aircraft.
