Memory health life center to be built in Quitman has new stirrings
Quitman Mayor Randy Dunn noted at the Thursday, March 19 city council meeting that citizens may start hearing new stirrings about the memory health life center to be built in town.
The idea for the project has been five years in coming; however, although the federal government awarded $6 million to the project – about 10% of the overall estimated cost to build the site – they had to match the amount before receiving the federal grants. This was pursued in the form of a state match. However, the topic has not been presented before the floor during two legislative sessions, said Dunn, despite continued contact with legislators regarding the project.
“We were pretty much dead in the water,” Dunn said in summation.
However, Dunn announced that he was told “things have changed,” and they are no longer required to match the funds. This means that the federal funds necessary to the project have now been released.
Not much new information is currently available, but Dunn says citizens should be aware that, “if you hear of some activity, it’s seriously looking at starting something.” More information will be discussed as it is known.
