Mineola City Council held a quick public hearing on the proposed city budget Monday and set a special meeting Monday, Sept. 18 to adopt the budget and the property tax rate to help support it.

The proposed property tax rate of $.5255 per $100 valuation is down almost a penny from last year’s $.535.

The budget is balanced at $5,851,457, which is down from the 2022-23 budget of $6,235,710 although projected current year expenses are $5,374,287.

The major revenues are property taxes at $2,121,210 and sales taxes at $1,532,147.

Departmental expenses proposed are police at $2,010,840, streets at $1,584,204, fire at $909,035 and administration at $827,108.

The council meets at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.

The council voted to accept an amended lease for the city tower on Front St. The city receives $5,544 per year to lease the tower. The amendment eliminated a revenue sharing clause.

City Secretary Cindy Karch explained that the company that manage the tower is unable to attract any other customers, so the city is not receiving any revenue sharing income.
