Mineola council repeals juvenile curfew
There is no longer a juvenile curfew in the city of Mineola.
Thanks to a new state law, cities can no longer enforce such ordinances, so the city council repealed the measure Monday.
Previously juveniles (under age 17) had to be off the streets by 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 p.m. weekends, with certain exceptions such as traveling to or from work.
Council member Sue Jones questioned what police can do, and Police Chief Chuck Bittner said they can still enforce existing laws if they are broken.
“It doesn’t give you anything if 10 or 15 are running round,” he said.
It was noted that the legislature wanted to put the responsibility on parents.
“It sounds like the parents are going to fix all that now,” Bittner responded.
