Mineola gets positive audit

The city of Mineola was given a clean bill of financial health by its accounting firm.

Jon Watson with Brooks Watson and Co. presented the report for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2022 at the July 24 city council meeting.

He noted that the city received an unmodified audit, the highest level.

The city’s combined fund balance grew by $456,262 to $3,152,966. He recommends cities keep a fund balance of at least two months operating expenses, and Mineola has five months with a goal to reach six months.

Of that, the unassigned or emergency fund balance is almost $2 million.

The city’s income for the year was $6,436,506 with sales taxes as the largest contributor at 30% followed by property taxes at 26% and charges for services at 18%.

Expenses were $5,518,828 led by public safety at 45%, general government at 17%, public works at 17% and solid waste at 10%.

A highlight was the city’s pension fund, which is funded at a rate of 99% compared to a national average of 78%.
