The Mineola Lady Jackets compiled some great experience against quality opposition at the Royse City tournament last week. On Saturday morning, the Lady Jackets fell to the Ursulin Academy Lady Bears, 13-3.

The Lady Bears put four runners on base in the first and pushed one run across to take the early lead. In the bottom half, Lady Jacket lead-off hitter Kenleigh Aguirre reached on a fielding error and promptly stole second and third base. She scored easily on a fielding error to notch the score at 1-1.

Ursulin used three singles and a bases-clearing triple to add four runs in the second. Mineola responded by adding a run in the second when Jocelyn Whitehead singled home Carmyn Heim. After two innings the score stood 5-2, Ursulin Academy.

The Lady Bears broke open the game in the third. They used two RBI-generating base hits and six free passes by Mineola pitching to produce a six-run inning. The Lady Bears were adept at putting the ball in play and forcing the Lady Jackets defense to make the proper plays.

After giving up the big inning, Mineola hurler Whitehead settled into a nice rhythm, but the damage had already been done. Mineola added a run in the bottom of the fourth but could not generate the big rally needed to challenge the lead.

At the plate, Whitehead led the Lady Jackets with a pair of singles. Aguirre, Lauren Simmons and Jaycee Smith each contributed a base hit. Mineola left nine runners on base.

The next opportunity to catch the Lady Jackets at home will be Wednesday, March 16 as they host Harmony in an afternoon district tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
