We are three weeks into our summer reading program, where we are unearthing things. So far, we have played dinosaur games and “hatched” dinosaur eggs, had a wonderful visit with Ranger Kerrick and Ranger Val from Tyler State Park while learning about burrowing animals, and then went on a dig. Our therapy dog friends visited on June 6 and will take a summer break, but they will be back in September.
There is still time to participate. We give out weekly reading challenges, and there’s also our Texas America 250 Reading Challenge to mosey along the Reading Trail and read 2,500 minutes before Dec. 31. Coming on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m. will be Joe McDermott, our musical guest sponsored by the Texas Commission on the Arts. So there’s a lot going on at the library.
We’ve been able to visit the primary and intermediate school campuses and bring a short program — mostly games that help with learning — and an opportunity to check out books. We will wrap up with them on June 16.
We had special guests on May 30 from the Native Plant Society of Texas’ Lakes and Pines Chapter, who presented information on native plants, and everyone went home with a plant to raise. Even six children got to participate in a program of their own.
Doesn’t our yard look nice now? Thank you for your patience while we waited for the bluebonnets to go to seed. We hope to have another beautiful display next year.
Just a reminder when you are searching the internet for information: The first response is now usually AI (artificial intelligence)-generated. You have to check the information. Quite often, AI combines information for our library here in Mineola, Texas, with information from a similarly named library on Long Island. Be sure to double-check the information.
We appreciate monetary donations to the Mineola Memorial Library, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and those donations may be tax-deductible. Your generosity is amazing. We cannot accept material donations of books, audiobooks or movies at this time because we have run out of room.
